The Marines pictured (left to right) are Lance Cpl. James Blomstran and his improvised explosive device detection dog Sage, Sgt. Matt Garst and Lance Cpls. Ryan Gerrity and Nicholas Dumke. The four Marines saved nine Afghans from a canal during a Dec. 2 night patrol. Near the end of their patrol, a vehicle carrying an Afghan family struck an Afghan National Army soldier and sent both plunging into the frigid canal. The ANA soldiers provided security while the 2nd Platoon Marines braved the swiftly moving current to recover the accident victims. Only 3 BN's have been using the IAR M-27 for the initial testing phase out of which only 2 BN's I believe have actually deployed with them 1/25 being one of them.They conducted testing state side and use in Afghanistan.As mentioned above it will be utilized by all Inf. BN's.Wpn's platoon only had 2 SAW's which they gave to a seasoned machine gunner and a mortar men.Every one loved them no troubles and alot less weight then carrying the SAW.The IAR M-27 is made for the Automatic Riflemen to lay down accurate suppresive fire.With it's free floating barrel it's cone of fire on fully auto is impressive.It's reliability is amazing we ran over 1,000 rounds mag after mag with no misfire's or cook off's or malfunctions to report of.It was an added benefit to have the IAR's with us.
A Gunner told us they wish they could issue an IAR to every Infantry Marine.
